- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 10 cups water
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 egg (beaten)
- coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt, then mix until a dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, covered.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Add baking soda carefully.
- Divide dough into small pieces and roll each piece into a rope shape. Twist into a pretzel shape.
- Place pretzels in the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool before serving.
