Homemade Soft Pretzels

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt, then mix until a dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes.
  3. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, covered.
  4. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Add baking soda carefully.
  6. Divide dough into small pieces and roll each piece into a rope shape. Twist into a pretzel shape.
  7. Place pretzels in the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

  • Serve with mustard or cheese dip for a delightful snack.
  • Store leftover pretzels in an airtight container.
